Bádatelia, ktorí sa venujú javu „Oranžovej revolúcie”, sa stále viac zaoberajú osobitosťami chápania a metódami správania tzv. bielo-modrej frondy, ku ktorej kategoricky zaraďovali na začiatku všetky regióny juhovýchodnej Ukrajiny, keďže vo všetkých troch kolách volieb v južných a východných oblastiach získal väčšinu Viktor Janukovyč. „Po každom kole volieb jedným zo zdrojov maľovania čierno-bieleho (resp. modro-oranžového) obrazu regionálnych sympatií boli dvojfarebné mapy, na ktorých Ukrajina bola rozdelená pekne na polovice, v duchu princípu väčšiny hlasov, ktorú daný kandidát získal v danej oblasti”.
Napokon si pomaly začali uvedomovať, že dovtedy hlásané rozmanité teórie o takom alebo inakšom delení si navzájom natoľko protirečia, že potrebujú seriózne prehodnotenie, revíziu, alebo dokonca odmietnutie. Kým ešte pred niekoľkými rokmi bolo normálne hovoriť o mentálnom rozdelení, ktoré podľa Huntingtona prebiehalo pozdĺž rieky Zbruč ako hranici medzi pravoslávím a katolicizmom (gréckokatolíckou cirkvou), tak jeden zo súčasných ukrajinských intelektuálov toto delenie nazýva „tupo prebratým kritériom”. Počas revolúcie „pokrokovo naladená inteligencia”, nasledovaná aj zahraničnými pozorovateľmi, nadšenými tým, že sa k oranžovej zóne pripojili Kyjev a centrálna Ukrajina, začala aktívne formulovať nové teórie. Jakub Kumoch cituje jedného zo západných novinárov, majúcich neraz sklon k zjednodušovaniu a povrchnému vnímaniu situácie: „Rozkol medzi proeurópskym Západom a proruským Východom nie je výsledkom posledného volebného súboja. Tento rozkol bol na Ukrajine odjakživa. Stredom Ukrajiny prebieha hranica medzi európskou a východnou civilizáciou”.

Výraz „východná civilizácia” tu bol použitý síce v zmäkčenej forme, v porovnaní s inými označeniami, ako napr. „Divé polia”, ale vo svojej podstate neznamená nič, keď si uvedomíme, že Juh a Východ boli osídlené v priebehu posledných 200 – 300 rokov. V Poľsku začali aktívne implementovať tézu, podľa ktorej samotný faktor začlenenia „oranžových území” do niekdajšej (prvej) Rzeczpospolitej viedol k upevneniu a zachovaniu tradícií demokratických hodnôt a k víťazstvu Viktora Juščenka. „To, čo bolo vtedy Ukrajina (za čias B. Chmeľnyckého), podporilo Juščenka, a to, čo sa ňou stalo neskôr – Janukovyča”, znevažujúco píše už citovaný poľský novinár Kumoch. Dôkladnejšie k problému uvedeného členenia pristupuje Dominik Areľ. Podľa jeho názoru rozdiel spočíva v rozličnom nazeraní na otázku národnej identity: „Ukrajinci v centrálnych a západných oblastiach majú jasnejšiu víziu svojej identity a hlbší pocit solidarity posilňuje ich pripravenosť kolektívne konať. Východní Ukrajinci sami seba nazývajú Ukrajincami, ale nie tak isto ako západní. V tomto prípade, zjednodušene povedané, „východní” bude znamenať východných a južných Ukrajincov, „západní” – centrálnych a západných”, nezabúda upresniť výskumník. „Východní Ukrajinci, na rozdiel od západných, nevnímajú identitu ako niečo výnimočné. V sovietskej ére sa cítili byť zároveň Ukrajincami i sovietskymi občanmi”. Tento názor by sme radi rešpektovali, keby takisto jednoznačne neoddeľoval jednu Ukrajinu od druhej. Pomerne výstižne sa na margo tejto problematiky vyslovil v diskusii usporiadanej časopisom Krytyka historik Jaroslav Hrycak: „Zakaždým, keď počúvam o ,dvoch Ukrajinách’, sa mi ruka naťahuje k počítačovej klávesnici, aby som napísal ďalšiu reakciu, pričom sám si uvedomujem: Aká je to kolosálna strata času! Neexistujú ani dve Ukrajiny, ani nie je dvadsaťdva Ukrajín, ale je len jedna Ukrajina”. Oranžový Kyjev a všetkým, ktorí sú hrdí na svoju metropolu a konečne vytvorenú proukrajinskú väčšinu v štáte Ukrajina, bolo príjemné uvedomiť si, že „fronda” sa nachádza „niekde na Juhu a Východe”. Blahosklonne dávali Janukovyčovi „hoci aj nie 15, ale aj 10 miliónov podpory”, ako výstižne konštatoval M. Minakov, počas revolúcie v chápaní oranžových ich dialóg s frondou vyzeral neraz ako dialóg dobrého boršču s balandou.

Profesor Stepan Vovkanyč, uvedomujúc si zložitosť priepaste medzi stúpencami Juščenka a Janukovyča, ktorú vytvorili médiá, píše: „…zdanlivo je zrozumiteľné, že voľby nerozdelili Ukrajinu, ale iba iluminovali areály, kde morálne a informačne i doposiaľ je, žiaľ, jednoduchšie indoktrinovať zazombiovanému spoločenstvu úskočno-propagandistické mimikry alebo ďalšiu lož”. Tak či tak však bolo príjemné uznať svoju väčšinu, hoci na záver to bolo na úrovni neistých 52 %. Len pre pochopenie vnútornej tragédie miliónov „projanukovyčovcov” haličskí intelektuáli začali rozhovor na tému „Ako nestratiť Donbas”. Zarytý prozápadný intelektuál Jurij Andruchovyč sa trápi na stránkach Krytyki: „Ako ,ich’ zbaviť toho pocitu (porážky – pozn. R. K.)? A zároveň, ako ,my’, zachraňujúc ,ich’, by sme sa mali sami vyhnúť manipulátorstvu (…)? Ako znova nezameniť ozajstný dialóg monotónne-bravúrnym skandovaním „Východ a Západ spolu!”.

Stretávame sa tu opäť s tendenciou haličského misionárstva, ktoré rozdelilo Ukrajincov na „nás” a „ich” a nechce vidieť vrstvu „nás” medzi „nimi,” ktorej bolo potrebné počas revolúcie poskytnúť čo najväčšiu pomoc, ako tej, ktorá mala k „nim” najbližšie. Želanie vidieť sa „ukrajinskejším” a „demokratickejším” než „Moskali na Donbase a v Novorossiji” (predtým sa hovorilo „za Zbručom”) vedie k tomu, že sa toto vyhrotené delenie umocní na historických mapách a po čase nebude mať kto dokázať, že „všetko v skutočnosti bolo inak.” „Absencia zmiešaných farieb na týchto mapách v niečom zodpovedá tézam o neabsolútnom víťazstve Juščenka. Mimochodom, v akých voľbách na svete v demokratických krajinách víťaz získava absolútnu prevahu?”, pýta sa A. Portnov. Prečo sa doposiaľ neobjavili mapy, ktoré by, ako azda zo žartu naposledy uviedol M. Riabčuk, „ukázali dvestodvadsaťdva Ukrajín”? Nik nám ich neukazuje.

Prečo Janukovyč?
Vysvetlenia typu „preto, lebo je proruský” zdanlivo aj vysvetľuje mnohé z hľadiska motivácie hlasovania južných a východných Ukrajincov, ale zároveň si vyžaduje dosť vážne vysvetlenia z hľadiska toho, z čoho pozostáva jeho „proruskosť”. Ruský politológ Stanislav Belkovskij odmietol tézu Vladimira Putina o nevyhnutnosti ochrany záujmov obrovského množstva Rusov na Ukrajine počas oranžovej revolúcie. V rozhovore pre Rádio sloboda uviedol: „Obyvatelia východnej Ukrajiny sa napriek všetkému považujú za občanov Ukrajiny a nie Ruska a Vladimir Putin zrejme nemá príslušné alebo korektné poznatky o tom, ako to je. Áno, východ a juh Ukrajiny sú regiónmi, ktoré hlasovali za Viktora Janukovyča, brániac svoje právo na kultúrnu identitu, právo na vlastnú mentalitu, právo nepodľahnúť tlakom unifikácie. Ale považujú sa práve za súčasť Ukrajiny, a nie Ruska a z tohto dôvodu žiaden rozkol nebude. Zostanú občanmi Ukrajiny, lebo ukrajinské občianstvo im bude dávať určité výhody vo vzťahoch s Európskou úniou, lebo to bude rovnako dobré pre obyvateľov východu a juhu Ukrajiny, ako aj pre obyvateľov západu Ukrajiny”.

Hoci za peknými slovami ruského občana o „kultúrnej identite” sa podľa nášho názoru skrývajú čiastočne iné pojmy, nemôžeme si nevšimnúť realistický prístup politológa k situácii, ktorá sa vytvorila. Psychológ Oleksandr Lach, ktorý opätovne poukázal na „odurmanenie” obyvateľov „bielo-modrej Ukrajiny”, nepravdivými informáciami médií, najmä ruských, vysvetľuje, že práve médiá zapríčinili, že „v uvedených podmienkach vznikla vo vedomí ľudí kognitívna disonancia – rozpor medzi presvedčením a hodnotovými orientáciami na jednej strane a skutočnosťou (v tomto prípade iluzórnou). Takýto stav sa vyznačuje znepokojením, agresivitou, psychologickou depriváciou. Na tomto pozadí sa vlastný kandidát vníma ako jediná nádej pre svetlú budúcnosť a stabilita, ktorú deklaruje ako hlavný cieľ, sa transformuje do istoty zajtrajším dňom”. Okrem toho po 21. novembri pochopili, že sa ocitli v menšine a v opozícii voči iným regiónom, čo si predtým neuvedomovali. „Revolta Donbasu, Taurii a Novorossiji bola frondou tých provincií proti centru, ktoré si uvedomili svoju neželanú a dokonca ani pre seba samých neopodstatnenú odlišnosť,” píše M. Minakov.

Pomerne úspešným vynálezom Janukovyčovho tábora, ktorý vyniesol jeho pozície na pomerne vysokú úroveň, ako aj faktorom, ktorý mu v celoštátnom meradle priniesol porážku, bola jeho stávka na regionalizmus. „Z masových nálad oranžových individuálne povedomie čerpalo také hodnoty, ako národná jednota a dôstojnosť i sebaidentifikácia ako vlastenca Ukrajiny. Ale povedomie ľudí bielo-modrej masy sa definovalo ako „donecké” alebo „krymské” a vyžadovalo si „nepokľaknúť, neustupovať cudzím, nezrádzať svojich”. Mnohí by povedali, že by bolo dosť čudné vytýkať predsedovi Strany regiónov podobný prístup, ale ako by povedali naši bratia v Odese, „nie je regionalizmus ako regionalizmus”. „Doneckí” pobúrili svojou všadeprítomnosťou a arogantným chovaním nielen Kyjevčanov, ako si mysleli ostatní, ale aj samotných „Krymčanov” alebo „Chersončanov”, v očiach ktorých sa Janukovyč neasocioval s ich malou vlasťou a dokonca ani nie s Ukrajinou, ale s Donbasom, ktorý „sa neženie naprázdno”. A. Portnov cituje dosť agresívne, ale účinné heslo Juščenkovho štábu v Dnepropetrovsku: „Zvíťazli sme nad Nemcami – zvíťazíme nad Doneckými”. Napriek tomu Janukovyč v týchto regiónoch zvíťazil, lebo pomerne značnú autoritu v týchto regiónoch majú doposiaľ sovietske hodnoty a dominoval v nich strach pred „banditami” a „Američanmi,” prítomný na podvedomej úrovni. Úspešným ťahom z hľadiska celkovej koncepcie očakávania Janukovyčovho víťazstva s pomocou Východu (a ako sa predpokladalo – aj Kyjeva) bolo vymedzenie sa proti obyvateľom západnej Ukrajiny ako nacionalistom, čo využil jeho tábor.

Študentka z Mykolajiva Kristina Berdynskych opisuje bielo-modrú voľbu väčšiny svojich rodákov: „Tí, ktorí volili V. Janukovyča, prirodzene, za všetky svoje biedy obviňujú V. Juščenka. Keď im vypli svetlo, alebo ak v budove nie je teplá voda, kto je vinný? Samozrejme, že nový prezident. Nikoho nezaujíma, že nová vláda ešte nie je sformovaná a pôsobí vláda V. Janukovyča, hoci už bola odvolaná, že prezidentom je ešte stále L. Kučma. Mnoho tzv. marginálov, t. j. tých, ktorí sa zo stúpencov jedného z kandidátov menia na politicky ľahostajných, svoje rozhodnutie motivujú tým, že nech už by k moci prišiel ktokoľvek, život a blahobyt iných ľudí mu bude ľahostajný. Ba dokonca, keď sa hovorí o stratégii rozvoja, to v lepšom prípade sa iba máločo zmení, nanajvýš tak k horšiemu”. Podobne hodnotí charakter gradácie politických názorov obyvateľov Východu a Juhu aj Myroslav Popovyč: „Motivácia politického správania Východu a Juhu Ukrajiny nie je tak jednoduchá, ako by sa mohlo na prvý pohľad zdať. Môže ísť skôr o istú indiferentnosť a absenciu politických sympatií k demokracii, súvisiacich podľa môjho názoru s tým, že sú to priemyselné oblasti Ukrajiny, ktoré boli za posledných 10 rokov deformované najviac, kde najviac ľudí prišlo o prácu a kde je nedostatok perspektív. Väčšina ľudí vychádza z úzko ponímaného pragmatizmu. Nehovorím o tých, ktorí podporili Janukovyča, rovnako, ako by podporovali mužstvo Šachtar na nejakom futbalovom zápase. Pochopenie toho, čo stojí za tým, žiaľ, chýba práve tam, kde sa rozhoduje o osudoch krajiny”. Povedané inými slovami, mentalita janukovyčovcov je jasným príkladom prevládania krátkodobých záujmov nad perspektívou, bezprostredných výhod nad dlhodobými, pokojnej „existencie” nad aktivitou. Tento prístup v 90. rokoch bol nazývaný „klobásový.”

Paradoxne práve takáto marginálno-pasívna pozícia väčšiny na Juhu a Východe zocelila povedomie oranžovej menšiny. Situácia v Charkove, ako ju opisuje O. Kocarev, bola charakteristická pre väčšinu oblastných centier na Juhu a Východe: „Vzhľadom na „rovnomerný” charakter rozkolu boli charkovské mítingy hlučnejšie ako kyjevské, hoci mnohokrát málopočetné. Oranžoví Charkovčania vždy museli brať do úvahy, že naproti nim stoja oponenti, ktorých treba prekričať”. Na jednom z internetových diskusných fór dopisovateľ z Novej Kachovky presviedčal ostatných: „Tu vôbec nie je nebezpečné byť za Juščenka :))) Tu jazdia po celé dni taxíky ako karavány. Jedna karavána s oranžovými stužkami, iná – s bielo-modrými. Stromy „preobliekajú” každé tri hodiny”.

Spomínaná študentka Mykolajivskej štátnej univerzity P. Mohylu v reakcii na názory svojich oponentov vyslovila presvedčenie, že „…azda moja materiálna situácia nevzrušuje nikoho, okrem mňa samotnej, možno pocítim kvalitatívne zmeny v ukrajinskej spoločnosti o niekoľko desaťročí, ale odmietam akceptovať to, že keď sa môžem slobodne vyjadrovať, polemizovať, nesúhlasiť, je to negatívum. Nikto ma nedonúti neželať svojej krajine ten najlepší osud”. Na konci oranžovej revolúcie sebavedomie juščenkovcov narastalo, kým sebavedomie bielo-modrých sa postupne menilo na bezmocnú zlobu. Po zavŕšení búrlivých udalostí medzi novembrom 2004 a januárom 2005 si aktívni prívrženci Janukovyča podľa vzoru svojho lídra začali prisvojovať rolu opozície a aureolu nevinnosti. Nielen v prípade politikov projanukovyčovských strán vyvstáva intelektuálny problém, či sú opozíciou, alebo nie, ale aj s ich „adeptmi”, ktorí sa z integrátorov s Ruskom v niečom zmenili na eurointegrátorov. Tvrdia, že by sa im to podarilo lepšie, ako juščenkovcom. Výňatok z diskusného fóra, ktorý bude nasledovať, je spočiatku dokonca problematické identifikovať, keby neobsahoval charakteristické chyby v ukrajinčine. Do revolúcie túto rétoriku používali oranžoví, po nej bielo-modrí.

Spomínaný bielo-modrý občan z Juhu tvrdí: „…nejako nevidím, že by Juščenko ,postupne plnil svoj program’. Nie, on nebude myslieť na to, aby rástla úroveň ekonomiky, okamžite začne s represiami a inými kriminálnymi aktivitami. Nepochopil som doposiaľ ako bolo možné ukradnúť zlaté rezervy Národnej banky… Za to, ako to tak chápem, bude potrebné ešte sa zodpovedať. Preto som pevne presvedčený, že Juščenko je víťazstvom Spojených štátov a Janukovyč by mohol urobiť Ukrajinu skutočne nezávislú od kohokoľvek”. Napriek tomu bolo možné nepochybne pozorovať tendenciu poklesu počtu Janukovyčových stúpencov, najmä v južných oblastiach, dokonca bez ohľadu na určité neúspechy novej moci. Tento proces neprebieha vždy formou bezprostrednej zmeny sympatií, ale aj v dôsledku liberalizácie médií a prechodom do sociálneho spánku, charakteristického pre postsovietskych ľudí.

Ako a prečo hlasovala chersonská Helada
Dovolil som si parafrázovať ternopoľčana Rostyslava Kramara, ktorý mi s nadšením hovoril o výsledkoch volieb v Chersonskej oblasti a celkovo na Juhu. Výsledky volieb v roku 2004 pre mnohých odhalili nový pomer síl na Ukrajine a donútili ich venovať väčšiu pozornosť územiu, o ktorom donedávna bolo, podľa M. Minakova, „nevhodné” hovoriť. Kým dovtedy sme používali slová Východ a Juh zároveň, ďalej budeme venovať pozornosť rozdielom medzi týmito regiónmi Ukrajiny. Celkovo prekvapivá je situácia, keď bádatelia identifikujú výsledky volieb s kolektívnou psychológiou obyvateľov Východu a Juhu (keď už samo osebe je neprípustné aplikovať princíp generalizácie). Snažia sa vysvetľovať túto psychológiu aplikovaním kritérií, použiteľných len pre jeden z regiónov. V prípade už spomínaného Andruchovyča sa stretávame s pojmom „industriálno-proletársky juh a východ Ukrajiny”. Ak by sme aj našli na Juhu priemysel, bude ho omnoho menej, ako na západe Ukrajiny, o ktorom Haličania zvyknú s ľútosťou hovoriť ako o surovinovom prívesku zvyšku Ukrajiny. Podobne Myroslav Popovyč narieka, že práve východná Ukrajina (v širokom ponímaní) je najčastejšie rozhodujúcim faktorom pri prijímaní najrozličnejších rozhodnutí štátnej moci. Vysvetľuje to tým, že „z hľadiska hustoty obyvateľstva Východ a Juh značne prevyšujú všetky ostatné regióny”.

Kým ešte v prípade Východu a najmä Doneckej panvy je ešte možné tieto interpretácie aplikovať, v prípade Juhu to v žiadnom prípade možné nie je. S výnimkou oblastných centier na čele s Odesou v regióne nie sú veľké mestá. V Chersonskej oblasti je na druhom mieste za Chersonom Nova Kachovka so 100 tisíc obyvateľmi. V Mykolajevskej oblasti je problémom nájsť aj takéto mesto. Medzi jednotlivými obcami sú aj viac než desaťkilometrové vzdialenosti.

Východ, presnejšie región Donbasu, sa rozvíjal a bol osídľovaný podľa potrieb ekonomiky a priemyslu. Stačí len odsledovať históriu samotného Donecka, pôvodne Juzovky – robotníckeho sídliska, vybudovaného v blízkosti hutníckeho kombinátu. Juh sa opieral o rozvoj obchodu v regióne Čierneho mora. A keďže už samotné podmienky baní a tovární znemožňovali slobodný rozvoj osobnosti, obchod vždy sám osebe rozvíja paritu a vzájomný rešpekt. A. Portnov, analyzujúci hlavné východiská knihy japonského vedca Giroaki Kuromiu „Sloboda a teror v Donbase”, poznamenáva, že „prírodné podmienky stepí, znásobené neľútostným vykorisťovaním robotníkov, absencia minimálnej sociálno-kultúrnej infraštruktúry a zároveň otvorený charakter baní prijímajúcich všetkých utečencov bez ohľadu na ich minulosť a špecifický charakter baníckej práce (v podzemí je neustály dozor nad robotníkmi jednoducho nemožný), spoluvytvárali celkovú klímu”. V takejto „klíme” rozhodujúcim faktorom bola brutálna sloboda a všeobecná svojvôľa. Podobný príbeh prežíva doposiaľ Dolné Sliezsko v Poľsku, kde po deportácii Nemcov noví prisťahovalci nebrali vážne ani svoj pobyt, ani prácu v tomto regióne.

V súvislosti s južnou Ukrajinou treba poznamenať, že princíp osídľovania Juhu príslušníkmi rozličných národov formoval jednak národnostnú toleranciu, jednak nový systém hodnôt, základom ktorého boli trhové vzťahy a osobná sloboda každého jednotlivca. Ukrajinský element v tomto procese zohral kľúčovú úlohu, na rozdiel od Donbasu, kde sa ruský živel takmer vyrovnával s ukrajinským . Vzhľadom na možné námietky v súvislosti s mnohonárodným charakterom Donbasu môžeme poukázať na príklad Odesy a Mariupoľa. V Odese, bez ohľadu na likvidáciu židovského elementu a sovietsku nivelizáciu Moldavcov a Rumunov, ešte možno zacítiť kolorit mentality a dialektu tohto prímorského mesta. Na druhej strane v Mariupole, bez ohľadu na jeho slávu gréckej metropoly Ukrajiny, len sotva možno začuť iný jazyk, ako koloniálny lumpen-variant ruštiny. Azovstaľ dotvára celkový kolorit tohto mesta.

Ďalším uhoľným kameňom, zjednocujúcim Juh a Východ, je údajná totálna ruskojazyčnosť uvedených regiónov. Profesor Stepan Vovkanyč tieto názory zaraďuje medzi faktory, ktoré podporovali zazombiovanosť „bielo-modrých”: „Počnúc od materskej škôlky a školy, prebieha hromadné presviedčanie ľudí, že ruskojazyčná kultúra, médiá a literatúra majú vyššiu úroveň; že elitu tvojho národa môže svet spoznať len prostredníctvom ,veľkého a mohutného ruského jazyka’; že bez ,staršieho brata’ o Ukrajine nemožno hovoriť; že Juh a Východ tvojej krajine rozumie prezidenta alebo kandidáta na post prezidenta len v ruskom jazyku, hoci sčítanie obyvateľstva svedčí o tom, že v každej oblasti Ukrajiny zatiaľ tvoríme väčšinu”.S tou väčšinou, ako je všeobecne známe, to však nie je tak jednoduché. Po prvé, oranžová revolúcia ukázala, že daný faktor nemal vo voľbách určujúci charakter. A. Portnov označuje asociovanie „proruskosti” s absenciou národnej perspektívy na týchto územiach za „prinajmenšom nekorektné”. Po druhé, pri hlbšom pohľade sa ukáže, že počnúc celým radom mestečiek strednej úrovne na Juhu nadobúda prevahu nesmrteľný „suržyk” (zmiešaný jazyk s prvkami ukrajinčiny a ruštiny) a v dedinách aj čistejšia ukrajinčina. Základ súčasnej Chersončiny v 19. storočí tvorili prisťahovalci z okolia Poltavy, Kyjeva a Černihiva. Dokonca aj v dedinách, ktoré založili Rusi, dominuje južný variant ukrajinčiny, ktorý chersonský filológ Volodymyr Demčenko povýšil na úroveň koiné – jazyka novoosídleného regiónu, ktorý vznikol pod vplyvom viacerých faktorov.

Za sovietskych čias vláda organizovala aktívne presídlenia vidieckeho obyvateľstva, čo v prvom rade podporovalo popularizáciu ukrajinských tradícií, jazyka a politických ideí. Tak napríklad do Demidivky, ktorú na severe Chersonskej oblasti založili Rusi, v 50. rokoch deportovali celú dedinu z Ivano-Frankovskej oblasti, ktorá podporovala jednotky UPA. V súčasnosti tam ruský dialekt používajú iba babičky, ku ktorým prichádzajú na expedície bádatelia z oblastného centra. Dedina Zmijivka na Dnepri bola v minulosti osídlená Švédmi a Nemcami. Po ich vysídlení, keď boli označení ako „Volksdeutsche”, sovietska vláda priviezla Bojkov z troch dedín, ktoré v súčasnosti ležia na území Poľska. V súčasnosti vybudovali popri fungujúcom protestantskom kostole pravoslávnu cerkvu Kyjevského patriarchátu a gréckokatolícky kostol. Nie je ťažké uhádnuť, za koho táto dedina hlasovala. Hoci hovoríme o druhoradosti významu jazyka vo volebnom procese 2004/2005, neustále sa v nich hralo jazykovou kartou a istým spôsobom sa prejavovala na povedomí jej nositeľov, či už ruskojazyčných alebo ukrajinskojazyčných. A tu opätovne zvíťazili národno-demokratické sily, keďže aj najkonzervatívnejšia ukrajinská dedina vo svojej väčšine stála za Juščenkom. Dominik Areľ poznamenáva, že ak aj v prestávke medzi kolami volieb sa uskutočnili nejaké zásadné zmeny na Juhu a Východe, tak sa to týkalo práve vidieka. Hoci stepné dediny nemajú veľký počet obyvateľov, práve vidiecke obyvateľstvo, podľa názoru chersonských analytikov, tvorilo avantgardu Juščenkovho víťazstva v 186. volebnom obvode, súčasťou ktorého je Bilozerský dedinský okres a jeden z obvodov mesta Cherson. Z hľadiska rozdelenia na okruhy toto územie bolo jedinou oranžovou enklávou v modro-bielej dominante Janukovyča. Ale keď sa pozrieme na rozdelenie podľa okresov, oranžová farba prevláda aj v Holoprystanskom a v iných okresoch Chersonskej oblasti.

Fenomén Bilozerského okresu sa vysvetľuje veľkým množstvom občanov, pripravených na zásadné trhové zmeny. Zaoberajú sa záhradníctvom a aktívne obchodujú so svojimi produktmi v priľahlých mestách. Druhým faktorom je to, že medzi obyvateľmi Bilozerščiny je mnoho presídlencov zo západných oblastí Ukrajiny. V Chersone a v oblasti sa tak prelínajú politické intencie príslušníkov rozličných lingvististicko-etnických skupín. Tak či inak, jazyk a národné presvedčenie donútili veľkú časť súčasného obyvateľstva Juhu postaviť sa proruskému kandidátovi a zahlasovali za V. Juščenka.

Podľa D. Arela nacionalistické tendencie prvý raz zohrali demokratickú úlohu a tak získali viac hlasov. „To, že Ukrajina v súčasnosti smeruje k otvorenej spoločnosti, sa do značnej miery deje vďaka sile jej nacionalizmu,” nazdáva sa.

Aj predoranžový Cherson bol pre bádateľov etnických procesov zaujímavým miestom. Väčšina tlačených periodík si na svojich stránkach udržala dvojjazyčnosť, čo pri pohľade zvonka vyzeralo v podmienkach Juhu prekvapujúco. Pritom všetky kyjevské periodiká, ako napr. Deň alebo Dzerkalo tyžňa boli na tomto území distribuované iba v ruskojazyčných variantoch. Mnohé z týchto novín si zachovali určitú mieru nezávislosti a boli oporami opozície – „Vik. Čas. Podii. Ľudy” (slov. Storočie. Čas. Udalosti. Ľudia, orgán strany Občianska kontrola), Vhoru (periodikum združenia novinárov Chersonskej oblasti) a i. Čo sa týka určitej nezávislosti médií, miestna moc nebola natoľko silná, aby ich dokázala zastaviť. Bojovala proti nim konkurenciou vlastných dotovaných periodík „Chersonskyj visnyk” a „Horožanyn”. Z výšky kyjevských vládcov pôsobila Chersonská oblasť natoľko marginálne, že sa nezdala byť nebezpečnou.

Zaujímavá situácia sa vytvorila vo vzdelávacom systéme oblasti. Na dvoch univerzitách – technickej a štátnej – boli pomerne silné odstredivé tendencie, bez ohľadu na to, že na rektorátoch sedeli Janukovyčovi dôverníci. V rámci Technickej univerzity už niekoľko rokov pôsobí pobočka Atlantickej rady Ukrajiny, vyslovujúcej sa za spoluprácu s NATO, kým Štátna univerzita stála na čele protestných akcií v meste. Vedúci katedier histórie Vitalij Andrejev a Jevhen Sinkevič viedli k chersonskému „bielemu domu” študentov priamo z univerzitných lavíc. Vedenie Chersonskej štátnej univerzity (ChDU) bolo donútené v prvých dňoch vyhlásiť, že študenti nebudú postihovaní za hodiny zameškané z politických dôvodov.

V Chersone funguje aj niekoľko stredných škôl, ktoré si zasluhujú pozornosť. Dve navzájom si konkurujúce súkromné školy – ruskojazyčná Škola humanitnej práce a ukrajinskojazyčné Chersonské kolégium Jevhena Malaniuka sa počas revolúcie ocitli na jednej strane – oranžovej. Treťou školou, ktorá si v tomto prípade zasluhuje pozornosť, je Oblastné lýceum, jediné svojho druhu, ktorého úlohou je už viac než desať rokov príprava vidieckej, prevažne ukrajinskojazyčnej mládeže, na štúdium pedagogických a poľnohospodárskych odborov. V priebehu rokov existencie tejto školy z nej vyšli stovky mladých vlastencov Ukrajiny. Juščenkov elektorát na Juhu sa zdal byť omnoho energickejší a tvrdohlavejší ako pasívna väčšina. Už v prvých dňoch demonštrácií v Chersone sa zhromaždili takmer dve tisícky prívržencov Juščenka (22. – 23. novembra), v Odese 5 tisíc, pričom počas frondy 16. januára sa na najväčšom chersonskom mítingu na podporu Janukovyča zhromaždilo 300 ľudí. Jeden z obyvateľov Záporožia prezentoval na internetovom fóre svoje prekvapenie, ktoré prerástlo do nadšenia: „Záporožie naozaj dva týždne bolo oranžové. Takýto prelom som ani len neočakával”. Otvorené prezentovanie vlastných oranžových sympatií prebudilo mnohých obyvateľov juhovýchodného regiónu. Treba však uznať, že ani miestna administratíva na Juhu nepodporila myšlienku separatizmu a napriek zdanlivej veľkosti sály v Severodonecku, ktorá bola preplnená fanatickými „bielo-modrými,” zástupcovia Juhu v nej takmer neboli prítomní. Jeden z pozorovateľov z Poľska, zástupca ukrajinskej komunity v tejto krajine, publicista Petro Andrusenko, ktorý sa zúčastnil všetkých kôl volieb, vrátane Záporožia a Donecka, je presvedčený, že v žiadnom prípade nemožno hovoriť o takom rozdelení Ukrajiny, aké by vyplývalo z hlasovania podľa jednotlivých oblastí. Nepríjemne ho zaskočil iba Doneck. Preto ak D. Areľ zaraďuje do prechodnej oblasti „malý Cherson”, podľa môjho názoru by stálo za to zaradiť tam celý Juh, keďže z mentálneho hľadiska oblasti Južného Pričiernomoria, s výnimkou Krymu, majú veľmi podobný charakter. Tie neveľké rozdiely, ktoré sa prejavovali v minulosti, sa čoskoro zotrú. Areľ sa nazdáva, že chersonská oblasť v týchto voľbách splnila úlohu rovnakého nárazníka, ako Pravobrežná Ukrajina vo voľbách 1994, keď „proruský” Kučma a „prozápadný” Kravčuk bojovali najmä o duše obyvateľov Čerkaskej, Vinnyckej a Kirovohradskej oblasti. V súčasnosti sa na prvom mieste ocitli južné oblasti. Na tomto mieste by som dal za pravdu Oleksandrovi Lachovi, že oranžová revolúcia bola aj dôsledkom prevratu v spoločenskom povedomí a nemala výrazne sociálne zafarbenie.

Namiesto doslovu
Mnohí očakávali, že Cherson azda má šancu prejsť na stranu oranžových, ale nestalo sa tak. Tieto očakávania prejavovali mnohí z Ukrajiny i zo zahraničia. Nie je však dôležité to, že oranžová menšina na Juhu a Východe prešla počas týchto mesiacov omnoho väčším zocelením, ako azda aj karnevalový kyjevský Majdan? Jej početní predstavitelia ukázali svojim susedom, príbuzným, priateľom, kolegom z práce, že netreba sa báť a je možné otvorene hovoriť svoje názory, že je možné cítiť sa ako občan a zároveň Ukrajinec. Very recently, the researchers analysing the phenomenon of Orange Revolution have been more and more preoccupied with the peculiarities of understanding and principles of behaviour of the so-called white-blue camp, which in their very first opinions comprised all the regions of Southeast Ukraine. In all the three rounds of polls Viktor Yanukovich gained the support of the majority there. “After each round of elections the black-and-white (blue-and-orange) maps dividing Ukraine neatly into two halves framed the regional preferences based on the majority of votes one or the other candidate polled in particular region.”

Finally, the analysts have begun to appreciate the fact that the theories coming up with multifarious divisions contradict each other to such an extent that they must seriously re-evaluate, revise or even reject them. While several years ago it was nothing unusual to speak about mental division, which according to Huntington ran along the river Zbruch – considered by him a border between the Orthodoxy and the Catholicism (Eastern Church) – today, one of the Ukrainian intellectuals claims that this division is “a mindlessly adopted criterion”. During the revolution “the progressive-spirited intelligentsia” followed by the foreign observers all enthusiastic about the fact that the orange camp was joined by Kiev and central Ukraine tried to establish new theories. Jakub Kumoch quotes one of the western journalists, who are notorious for their over-simplifications and shallow understanding of the matters: “The schism between the pro-European west and pro-Russian east is not a result of the last elections. It is of a much more fundamental basis. In its centre the country is marked with the line separating the European and Eastern Civilization.” In comparison to often used “The Wild Fields” the term Eastern Civilization is clearly meant to sound less offensive here but essentially it stands on no solid grounds because the south and east of the country did not begin to be populated until some 200 or 300 years ago. According to a thesis ardently promoted in Poland the victory of Viktor Yanukovich is understood as a result of “orange regions” being part of the first Rzeczpospolita (Polish republic) the fact of which has led to preservation and consolidation of democratic values there. “What was Ukraine in those times (under Khmelnytsky) provided a support for Viktor Yushchenko and what has become of it later helped Yanukovich,” says the already cited Polish journalist Kumoch disparagingly. Dominik Arel’s approach is more profound. He relates the difference to different attitudes towards the question of national identity: “The Ukrainians from central and western regions have clearer vision of their own identity. The deeper sense of solidarity lies behind their readiness to act as one. On the other hand, although the eastern Ukrainians call themselves Ukrainians it is not in the same sense as in the case of western Ukrainians.” The author does not forget to remind us that the term “eastern” stands for the eastern and southern and “western” substitutes the central and western Ukrainians. “The eastern Ukrainians do not consider identity being anything special. During the Soviet Era they thought themselves as both Ukrainians and Soviet citizens at the same time.” This view might be easily accepted if only it did not create two Ukraines as well. In a public discussion arranged by the magazine Krytyka a historian Jaroslav Hrycak made quite an apposite remark on it: “Each time I hear about “two Ukraines” I reach for the keyboard to write another reaction but then I realize what a waste of time it is. There is nothing like two or twenty-two Ukraines, there is only one Ukraine.” The orange Kiev and everybody proud of their metropolis and finally reached pro-Ukrainian majority in the state enjoyed it when they realized that the fronde lies “somewhere in the east and south”. Condescendingly, they gave Yanukovich if not 15 then at least 10 million votes and as M. Minakov pertinently put it; their dialogue with the “frond” looked more than once like the dialogue between a good borscht and (weak) balanda.

Professor Stepan Vovkanych understanding the intricacies of a gap between the adherents of Yushchenko and Yanukovich that the media created remarks: “… seemingly, it is understandable that the elections did not divide Ukraine, only illuminated those areas where morally and from the point of informedness it is, unfortunately, even today easier to implant propagandistic mimicries and another lies.” This way or the other, it was pleasant to acknowledge one’s own majority, although in the end it was represented only by an uncertain 52%. Just to understand the inner conflict of millions of anti-Yanukovich; the Galician intellectuals opened the topic of “How not to lose Donbas?” while the determined pro-Western intellectual Yuri Andrukhovych expresses his concerns on the pages of Krytyka: “How to disembarrass ‘them’ of that feeling [the defeat]? And at the same time, how to avoid being manipulative while rescuing ‘them’ […]? How not to replace the real dialogue with the monotonously pompous “East and West together!”?

In such behaviour we can track down the traces of a Galician missionary approach, which divided Ukrainians into ‘us’ and ‘them’ ignoring the group of ‘us’ among ‘them’, which as the closest to ‘them’ needed the biggest support during the revolution. The desire to appear “more Ukrainian” and “more democratic” than “the Moskals on the Donbas or in Novorossiya” (both regions formerly referred to as “over the Zbruch”) might lead to “petrifaction” of this view in the historical maps and after some time there might be nobody to say that “in fact everything was different”. “The absence of the other colour in these maps does not correspond to the theory of Yushchenko’s non-absolute victory. By the way, is there a democratic country where anybody would poll an absolute support in the elections?” says A. Portnov. Where are the maps showing us “two hundred and twenty-two Ukraines” as M. Ryabchuk said in jest? Nobody brings them up.

Why Yanukovich?

The answer is obvious: because he is pro-Russian. Saying this apparently explains much of the motivation of southern and eastern Ukrainians but it also requires a serious analysis of what this “pro-Russianness” of Yanukovich means. Russian political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky refused Vladimir Putin’s thesis, in which he called for the protection of a vast number of Ukrainian Russians during the Orange Revolution. In the interview for Radio Free Europe Belkovsky said: “Despite everything, the inhabitants of the eastern Ukraine think of themselves as citizens of Ukraine and not Russia and Vladimir Putin evidently lacks the knowledge of how the things are. Yes, although in an effort to protect their cultural identity and right for their own mentality against the pressure of unification the east and south voted for Victor Yanukovich, they still consider themselves a part of Ukraine not Russia and therefore no schism comes to a question. They will remain Ukrainians because Ukrainian citizenship will guarantee them certain assets in a mutual relationship with the European Union, which is beneficial for citizens of both southeast and west of the country.

Despite the fact that behind the appealing words of a Russian citizen talking about “cultural identity” there are some other concepts as well, one cannot overlook the realistic approach of an analyst interpreting the situation. Psychologist Oleksandr Lach who has repeatedly touched the topic of white-blue Ukraine citizens dying out on the basis of misleading information of media (Russian media mainly) explains that it was media which caused that under the given circumstances the minds of people succumbed to cognitive dissonance – the discrepancy between the belief and value orientation on one hand and reality (in this case fictitious) on the other one. This situation is characterized by an anxiety, aggressiveness and mental deprivation. In this prospect one own candidate is considered the only hope for a better future and the stability proclaimed by him or her to be a privileged concern transforms itself into a confidence as soon as a day turns into tomorrow. Moreover, after 21st of November they took in that with regard to other regions they were in a position of minority and opposition, the fact of which they had not fully acknowledged before. “The revolt of Donbas, Taurida and Novorossyia represented an opposition of those regions against the centre which realized their own undesirable and even unreasonable difference,” said M. Minakov.

What earned Yanukovich his relatively high position but in wider scales contributed to his defeat was the concept of regionalism, quite a successful invention of the Yanukovich’s camp. “For the individual people the orange mass actions offered values such as national identity and dignity or self-identification with the concept of being a Ukrainian patriot. On the contrary, the white-blue followers identified themselves as ‘the Dons’ or ‘the Crimeans’ the only consequence of which was the credo not to kneel or submit to the others – in other words to stay with yours.” Many might say that it would be strange to reproach the leader of the Party of Regions for the similar attitude but as the brother Odessans would say: “there is regionalism and regionalism”. The Dons’ arrogant behaviour and omnipresence did not offend the Kievans only as the others believed but also the Crimeans and Kharkivans who associated Yanukovich neither with their region nor with Ukraine as whole but with Donbas, which was said not to push its way through without reason. Andriy Portnov quotes a relatively aggressive but effective motto of Yushchenko’s camp in Dnipropetrovsk: “We managed to win over the Germans, we will win over the Dons as well.” However, in these regions the soviet values and the fear of “bandits” and “Americans” still alive in the people’s subconscious prevailed and led to Yanukovich’s victory. In the overall, the strategy of defining against the nationalism of western Ukraine, which was to guarantee Yanukovich the victory – taking into consideration the support of eastern regions (Kiev as well) – had proved to be a clever step by the Yanukovich’s faction.

A student from Mykolaiv Kristina Berdinsky comments on the background of the majority of her countrymen’s choice: “Those who voted for Yanukovich blamed Yushchenko for all their miseries. When there was no electricity in the household or the hot water supplies stopped who was to be blamed for? New president, of course. Nobody cared that the new government had not yet been made up and that the government of Viktor Yanukovich was still in power although being dismissed and Leonid Kuchma was still in function. Many of the so called marginalists – those who replaced their active support of one of the candidates for a political apathy justified their decision by a belief that whoever comes to power, the life and struggles of the others are indifferent to him or her. Moreover they say that when a politician speaks about the progress strategy only few things improve if anything at all.” The shifts in the attitudes of people from east and south of the country are assessed similarly by Miroslav Popovich: “The political behaviour of eastern and western Ukraine is not such a simple matter as it might seem at the first sight. Its primary causes lie probably in the indifference or absence of political sympathies with democracy. It is based on the fact that from all the regions these industrial parts of Ukraine have suffered from the unemployment and lack of perspectives the most in the past 10 years. The majority of people thus stuck with a narrow-scoped pragmatism. I do not speak about those who supported Yanukovich in the same way as they would express their sympathies in a football match with the players of Shachtar. The deeper understanding of the causes behind such attitude is felt to be missing when the serious matters of the country are being decided.” In other words the optics of the pro-Yanukovichs is an evident example of the how the shortsighted interests, instant advantages and quiet “existence” dominates over the long-term perspectives and activity. This was called “a sausage approach” in the 90s.

Paradoxically, the passivity of eastern and southern majority bolstered the privity of the orange minority. Situation in Kharkiv as described by O. Kocarev was characteristic of almost all the centres in the south and east: “Given the evenness of the split the Kharkivan meetings were noisier than the Kievan ones even though often they were far less numerous. Orange Kharkivans had always to take into consideration that there are opponents to be outscolded.” In a discussion on the Internet a correspondent from Nova Kakhovka gave such an account: “There is no danger in being pro-Yushchenko around here. The taxies drive through the city in convoys all the days long. One convoy decorated with orange ribbons the other one with white-blue. The trees are ‘given their new clothing’ every three hours.”

In reaction to the opinions of her opponents, the above-mentioned student from Mykolaiv Petro Mohyla State Univerzity defends her standpoint: “… my material situation concerns nobody except me. I might not experience the impact of the changes in Ukrainian society earlier than after several decades but I deny accepting the fact that I cannot express myself, argue and disagree with things freely. That is negative. Nobody can make me not to wish my country the best future possible.” Towards the ending of the Orange Revolution the self-confidence of Yushchenko’s camp grew stronger while the confidence of his rival turned into a frustrated anger. After the stormy events were over between November 2004 and January 2005 the active adherents of Yanukovich took the role of opposition with a halo of innocence after their leader Yanukovich. An intellectual problem of whether they are opposition or not, touches not only the pro-Yanukovich parties but also the “adepts” which have turned from the integrators with Russia into a partial “eurointegrators”. They claim that they would manage it better than the Yushchenkos. The excerpt from an Internet forum, which follows, would have been very difficult to identify if it had not included the mistakes in Ukrainian language. Before revolution used by the orange faction after it this rhetoric has been adopted by the white-blue camp.

A white-blue supporter from the south says: “… I somehow cannot see Yushchenko fulfilling his program. No, he will not concern himself with the economic growth. Rather he will begin with the repressions and other criminal actions. I have not yet understood how it was possible to steal the National Bank reserves… One day the consequences will have to be drawn for it. I am strongly convinced that Yushchenko represents the victory of United States while Yanukovich could make Ukraine independent of everyone.” Despite such voices and even despite several set-backs of the new government the tendency towards decreasing of Yanukovich’s followers has clearly been noted, mainly in the southern parts. This process is carried out not only in the form of immediate change of sympathies. It is also a result of the liberalization of media and the leverage of the syndrome of social indifference so characteristic of the post-Soviet people.

How did the Kherson Ellada vote and why

The title of this paragraph paraphrases the words of Ternopilan Rostyslav Kramar who openly expressed his enthusiasm for the elections results in Kherson and other southern regions. The 2004 elections results revealed a new proportion of political power in the country and compelled many to turn their attention towards the region, which in the opinion of M. Minakov had been “unsuitable” to be spoken about just a short time ago. While in the previous text the east and south were understood as one, from now on let us look closer on what makes these two regions different. The fact that the researchers interpret the elections results in the terms of collective psychology of southerners and easterners is quite surprising because applying the principle of generalization is primarily an unhappy approach. The criterion, which is to support such an explanation, is often applicable for one of the regions only. In the case of already mentioned Andrukhovych we can come across with the term “industrial proletarian south and east” but in fact, the opposite is true. The south is much less industrial than the west of Ukraine by the Galicians often called with sadness a resource appendix of the country. Miroslav Popovich similarly laments upon the fact that the eastern Ukraine (in a wider sense) often plays a decisive role in many a decision of the state officials. In his opinion “it is a result of the density of population in the south and east much higher than in the other regions.”

While in the case of the east (Donets basin in particular) this interpretation holds true in the case of south its relevance is questionable. With an exception of the provincial centres (Odessa quite ahead) there are only few big cities in this area. In Kherson region the second largest city after Kherson is Nova Kakhovka with around 100,000 inhabitants. In the Mykolayiv region it is a problem to find even that big city. Moreover, the distances between the towns are often bigger than 10 kilometres.

The eastern parts, Donbas region in particular, were developed and populated in concord with the needs of the economics and industry. The history of Donetsk, former Yuzovka (Hughesovka) – worker settlement placed in the nearness of a metallurgical factory complex – can serve as an example. The south was bound to the development of trade in the region of The Black Sea. While fundamentally the conditions of the mines and factories hindered the independent development of an individual, the trade has always nourished the parity and mutual respect. Analyzing the main premises of Giroaki Kuromiya as presented in his book Freedom and Terror in the Donbas A. Portnov notices that “the natural conditions of the steppes multiplied by the merciless exploitation of workers, the absence of minimal social and cultural infrastructure and also the openness of the mines accepting all the refuges disregarding their past and specific character of the mining work (in the underground the constant supervising is simply impossible) – all these factors had contributed the overall nature of the region.” In this climate the most prominent factor was the brutal freedom and general arbitrariness. The story of Polish Lower Silesia is quite the same. After the German population was expelled the newcomers did not take their existence and work here seriously at all.

It is also important to point out that in the case of Ukrainian south the principle of multinationality contributed to ethnic tolerance and also to the system of values the basis of which was the market relationship and individual freedom. The Ukrainian element played a key role in this process in comparison to Donbas where the Russian element was almost as strong as Ukrainian. Considering the potential objections in connection with the multinational character of Donbas region let us bring forth the examples of Odessa and Mariupol. Despite the destruction of Jewish element and soviet levelling of Moldavians and Romanians there are still some traces of the former local atmosphere and dialect in Odessa. On the other hand in Mariupol – despite its reputation as a Ukrainian Greek metropolis – you can hardly hear any other language but the colonial corrupt variant of Russian. The giant factory Azovstal contributes to the overall colour of the city as well.

Another feature that the east and south are said to have in common is their alleged Russianness. Professor Stepan Vovkanych puts this judgement into a category of factors, which supported “the zombieness” of the white-blue camp: “From the kindergarten and school times, there is a mass campaign trying to convince everybody that the Russian culture, media and literature rate higher, that the world can learn about the elite of your nation only through the respectable and vast Russian language, that without the “elder brother” one cannot speak about Ukraine and that the south and east of the country understand the president or presidential candidate only when speaking in Russian. The census, however, proves that in the present we have the majority in all the regions of Ukraine.” The matter of majority is far more complicated than meets the eye. First of all, the Orange Revolution demonstrated that this factor did not play a decisive role in the elections – Portnov says that identifying the “pro-Russianness” of these regions with the absence of national perspective is “at least unfair” – and furthermore, after a closer observation it comes to light that in many of the middle-size southern towns the immortal “surzhyk” (a mix of Ukrainian and Russian) prevails and that in the villages this holds true also for a purer Ukrainian. In 19the century the newcomers from Poltava, Kiev and Chernihiv formed the early stages of contemporary Kherson dialect. Even in the villages founded by the Russian the southern variant of Ukrainian dominates. Kherson philologist Volodimir Demchenko has elevated this variant to the level of koiné – language of a newly populated region, which originated through the coincidence of various factors.

During the Soviet era the government organized resettlements of the village inhabitants, which in the first place resulted in popularization of Ukrainian traditions, language and political ideas. In the 1950s the Russians resettled the whole village from Ivano-Frankivsk province (the people supported the troops of UPA) into Demydivka founded by the Russians in northern Kherson. Now, the Russian dialect is used exclusively by the old women there the consequence of which they are visited by the expeditions of researchers coming from the provincial centre. The village Zmiyivka on the Dnieper was in the past settled by the Swedes and Germans. After being labelled the “Volksdeutsche” they were displaced and the Boykos who came from three villages now lying in Poland populated the village. Besides the functional Protestant church, they raised an Orthodox church of Kiev Patriarchy and a Greek Catholic church there, too. It is not difficult to guess who this village was meant for. Though the language was considered only a secondary factor in the 2004/2005 elections the “language card” had often been put forward and hence it must have left an impact on the awareness of both Russian-speaking and Ukrainian-speaking populace. In the elections, however, the national democratic powers won since even the most conservative Ukrainian village showed its support for Yushchenko. Dominik Arel thinks that if there were any shifts in the east and south between two rounds of the polls they had to take place in the country not the city. Although the steppe villages’ population is not very high, according to Kherson analysts it was the country inhabitants who represented the avant-garde of Yushchenko’s victory in the 186th polling district comprising the Belozersk country district and one of the districts of Kherson city. With regard to the division into wider spheres this was the only orange enclave within the white-blue area dominated by Yanukovich. But if we look at the map of the polling districts then the orange colour prevails also in Holoprystansk and other parts of the Kherson region.

The phenomenon of Belozersk district is often explained by the fact that many people were ready for a radical change of the market there. These people making their living by the gardening have been trading their products actively in the nearby towns. The second factor lies in the fact that among Belozersk’s citizens there are many of those who came from western Ukraine. In Kherson and surrounding area the various ethno-linguistic groups with their political preferences live together. This way, the language and national concerns made a huge number of southern Ukrainians turn from a pro-Russian candidate and vote for Viktor Yushchenko.

Arel claims that it was for the first time ever that the nationalistic tendencies played a positive role in a democratic process and helped to increase the electorate. “That Ukraine is on its way towards an open society goes on behalf of the power of nationalism,” he says. Even the pre-orange Kherson was, however, an interesting place for the ethnologists. The majority of the periodicals kept their bilingualism. Taking the southern conditions into consideration this situation seemed quite paradoxical from the outside. At the same time all the Kievan periodicals – such as The Day or Weekly Mirror were distributed throughout the region exclusively in their Russian variant. Many of these newspapers kept certain level of independence and became a linchpin for the opposition – The Century, Time, News, People, the tribune of the party of Civic Control, Vhoru (periodical of the association of Kherson journalists) and others. It was beyond the power of local officials to suppress their independence completely and so they fought against them by the competition of their own subsidized periodicals such as Khersonsky visnyk or Horozhanin. From that far the Kherson region must have appeared too marginal to be a potential danger for the Kievan “rulers”.

The situation in the regional schools was also quite interesting. Despite Yanukovich’s fiduciaries in the rectorates of two regional universities (Kherson State University and Kherson Technical Univerzity) the centrifugal tendencies were still very strong there. The Technical University houses the division of Atlantic Council of Ukraine which espouses the co-operation with NATO while the State University became a leader of the protest events in the town. Two heads of the departments of history Vitalyi Andreyev and Yevhen Sinkevich led the students from the auditoriums directly to the Kherson “White House”. In the first days the administration of the Kherson State Univerzity was forced to agree on the students being not punished for the absences based on political reasons.

There are several secondary grammar schools in Kherson, which are worth mentioning as well. During the revolution, two competing private schools – Russian-speaking School of Humanitarian Labour and Ukrainian-speaking Kherson College of Yevhen Malanyuk found themselves on the same side of the line – orange. The third school worth mentioning, The District Lyceum, represents a unique school of its kind. For more than 10 years its role has been to prepare the country-born and predominantly Ukrainian-speaking young people for the study of pedagogical and agricultural subjects. In the course of its existence the school has produced hundreds of Ukrainian patriots. Yushchenko’s electorate in the south seemed to be far more energetic and stubborn in comparison to the passive majority. As early as the first days of demonstrations (22nd and 23rd November) more than 2,000 and 5,000 of Yushchenko’s adherents gathered in Kherson and Odessa respectively while during the fronde the largest Kherson meeting held on 16th January in favour of Yanukovich comprised some 300 people only. On the Internet forum one of the Zaporozhie citizens conveyed his surprise transformed into enthusiasm: “For two weeks Zaporozhie was really orange. I have not dreamt of such a turn.” The open manifestation of their orange sympathies woke many of the southerners up. It must be admitted that even the local administration rejected the idea of separatism and despite the seemingly vast space of auditorium in the northern Donetsk full of the white-blue fanatics; the representatives of the south did not join them. A professor, journalist and advocate of Ukrainian minority in Poland, Petro Andrushenko, participated in all rounds of the polls (Zaporozhie and Donetsk included) and he is convinced that there is no such split in Ukraine as the regionally based graphs show. He was disappointed only by Donetsk. Therefore, if Arel reckons “small Kherson” among the unstable regions, in the view of the above assumptions and also given the mentality of south Black Sea area which is quite similar to it (with the exception of Crimea), I propose that this group might be extended to include all the southern regions. The differences so prominent in the past should blur very soon. Arel thinks that Kherson region took up the role of a bumper in the similar way as the right-bank Ukraine in 1994 elections when the pro-Russian Kuchma and pro-Western Kravchuk contended for the inhabitants of Cherkasy, Vinnytsya and Kirovohrad regions. Now the position of the “first in the line” passed to the southern regions. In this respect I would be inclined to agree with Oleksandr Lach saying that the Orange Revolution was also a result of the change in social awareness of the people and did not have any distinctive social colouring.

Instead of epilogue

Many believed that Kherson would seize its chance, cross the line and join the orange camp. These expectations were manifested by many Ukrainians as well as by a number of observers from abroad. Although it did not come to that, is it not far more important that during those several months the orange minority in the south and east underwent maybe a stronger invigoration than in a carnival Kievan Maydan? Many people showed their neighbours, relatives, friends and colleagues from work that they must not fear to voice their opinions and that it is possible to feel like both a citizen and Ukrainian at the same.
